Lloyds Banking Group is planning to do this another 55 bank branches are closingThis brings the total number of shutters to be closed by 2026 to almost 300.
The latest closures are set to begin in the new year and will include Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Lloyds-branded branches in locations from Surbiton to Port Talbot, Burgess Hill and Didcot.
It means Lloyds Banking Group will close 292 branches in the two years between January 2024 and December 2025 as part of a wider business transformation aimed at cutting costs and encouraging customers to bank digitally.
Lloyds said transactions across its 55 branches had fallen 55% over the past five years, while use of its mobile banking app had increased.
Once all previously announced closures are complete, the group will have a network of 892 branches, including 447 Lloyds Bank locations, 341 Halifax-branded branches and 104 Bank of Scotland locations.
New rules coming into force next week mean banks and building societies must ensure any communities they leave have other ways to get cash. Lloyds said on Friday that all communities affected by the 55 branch closures were within reasonable distance of services such as the post office or a free ATM.
It is not expected that the closures will result in job cuts, but employees will be offered alternative positions, including in other branches. According to the Accord union, which represents Lloyds employees, many are also choosing to work from home using online or telephone banking.
However, Accord general secretary Ged Nichols said it was important to remember that branches had a broader role to play in the communities they serve. “We have an excellent track record of preventing redundancies and finding alternative jobs for employees during store closures,” he added.
“However, we believe that the ongoing program of bank branch closures – not just Lloyds – should be reconsidered in light of how their services can potentially help bridge the digital divide. This could mean, for example, supporting people who need to sign up for pension credits to access their winter fuel allowance and get what they are entitled to. Branches could better serve their communities.”
On Thursday, British retail bank bosses from lenders including NatWest, HSBC, Lloyds and Santander met with City Minister Tulip Siddiq and agreed to open 350 banking centers by the end of the parliamentary session to offset the number of branch closures.
Through these hubs, customers can deposit checks, deposit cash and have one-on-one conversations with a local banker, regardless of which lender they bank with. Bosses are also considering setting up printers at their headquarters to make it easier for employees to print out bank statements or documents.

“Banking centers are a lifeline for local communities that have lost their last bank branch. I am confident that banks will honor the commitment they made today and take a more proactive approach to meet the needs of local communities,” Siddiq said in a statement.
